Greetings from Jerry Solomon, Chairman, Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees
We live in an age of remarkable progress in medicine, advances that even a generation ago seemed the stuff of science fiction and fantasy.
Powered by science and technology, we’ve seen breakthroughs in cardiac care, cancer care, orthopedics, neurosurgery and virtually every other field of health care. It’s led to better quality care, improved safety, fewer and shorter hospital stays and prevention or management of many previously fatal diseases. Among the most impressive results has been the increase in life expectancy.
An American born in 1900 could expect to live for about 47 years. U.S. life expectancy is projected to reach 82 by 2030. We need look no further than our own communities in the Northwest Valley and West Valley for evidence of the longevity boom. Sun Health has played a pivotal role in helping area residents live not just longer lives, but more healthy and fulfilling lives. Through programs like the Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing, we are teaching people how to take better care of themselves and become advocates for their own health.
Despite these gains, we still face many challenges in the areas of health care delivery, financing, long-term care, senior housing and more.
As a member of the Sun Health Foundation board of trustees for three and a half years, I witnessed the community’s boundless support of Sun Health, support which not only created the area hospitals and the research institute but nurtured their growth. Community members continue to support these facilities but they’ve also extended their generosity to our community health and wellness programs and senior housing. Sun Health’s community-focused mission of providing superior health care would not exist without the kindness of foundation donors.
As the 2015-16 chairman for Sun Health Foundation’s board of trustees, I am in awe of Sun Health’s past and its potential for continued greatness. The foundation will continue to focus on fundraising to support the hospitals, the research institute, and community wellness and senior living programs.
We also will work to increase community awareness of Sun Health’s mission and vision and innovative programs as well as recruit board members, committee members and volunteers to keep the organization dynamic and forward thinking. And, we will persevere as an advocate for your health and wellness. We want you to keep your bodies and brains as fit as possible, adding years to your life and life to your years.
It is an exciting time of growth and development for Sun Health and Sun Health Foundation is one of the linchpins in ensuring the organization’s success. Philanthropy helped Sun Health become one of the most influential nonprofit health organizations in the state and it will help determine Sun Health’s standing in the future.
It’s a daunting task but one I relish. When a small but dedicated group of Sun Citians set out almost 50 years ago to bring health care to their fledgling community, they faced huge obstacles. But they persevered and their dream eventually became a reality. We owe it to them to keep the dream alive.
Wishing you good health,
Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees
