Exciting news! Sun Health Foundation’s fourth annual 5K for Women’s Health on Sunday, Sept. 24, at Surprise Stadium raised nearly $50,000, with net proceeds benefiting diabetes prevention education through Sun Health Wellness. This is a testament to the community’s growing support for vital wellness resources that empower longer, healthier lives.
There’s more great news. The event welcomed a total of 424 runners, walkers, and riders ages 2-93 who participated in person or virtually – the most participants to date.
An excited crowd was welcomed by Michael Barnes, Vice-chair of Sun Health Foundation’s Board of Trustees and Senior Vice President & Senior Trust Advisor, Northern Trust.
“Thank you to participants, donors, sponsors, community partners, and spectators. Your support makes a tremendous impact and hits close to home for many of you who know someone at risk or is affected.”
Mr. Barnes added, “Diabetes is a serious health condition that can be prevented,” then shared some startling statistics. “Did you know that nearly 1 in every 9 adult women is living with diabetes and that it raises women’s risk of heart disease four times? Prevention education is key. Together, we can help reduce the risk for the women in our lives through education. Sun Health champions and conducts diabetes management and prevention education in the West Valley every day.”
Many racers shared what they loved most about participating, and supporting a good cause was among their reasons. Others included “People having fun,” “Being with friends,” “Community coming together,” “The organization,” and “The exercise.”
In addition to the race, other highlights of the morning included music, displays with great information and giveaways, and a drawing for a chance to win a Wellness Gift Box.
Have fun while supporting a great cause was the order of the day. There were many creative team names, and athletic attire adorned with sequins, headbands, skirts, tutus, and sashes. One avid runner attended as Spiderman – as he has every year.
Many individuals, groups, and organizations came together – from all over the Valley – for this great cause; some for the third or fourth time. They included residents from our Sun Health Communities – The Colonnade, Grandview Terrace, La Loma Village, and Sun Health At Home, Banner Health staff and physicians, and Sun Health staff. What an impact we make together!
The 5K is a signature celebration of health and wellness in the West Valley so mark your calendars for September 22, 2024. For information on all Sun Health Foundation events, contact Shawna Bridgman at [email protected].
