Oh baby! Leaders and staff from Sun Health Foundation and Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West gathered safely at an open house to celebrate 20 years of maternity services in a retirement community. It was on 02/02/2002 that the first babies were delivered – twin boys weighing in at seven and six pounds.
Today, 25,000 babies later, these services are thriving with the growth of surrounding communities.
While the birth rate in Arizona and Maricopa County has dropped since 2009, Banner Del E Webb has seen its deliveries increase. In 2021, it broke previous records and delivered 2,057 babies.
“Thanks to the generosity of donors, a new era was born with the opening of the hospital’s Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health,” said Gina W. Ore, Chief Philanthropy Officer for Sun Health Foundation. “It’s inspiring to witness the growth of these services and the community support through the Generosity for Generations Campaign that continues to help make them possible.
Banner Del E. Webb is bucking the baby-bust trend because it offers services in the fast-growing northwest Valley which includes areas such as Surprise and Peoria. Also, the hospital’s focus on providing a home-birthing-like experience attracts mothers-to-be from the East Valley, Prescott, and Wickenburg.
