With the school year in full swing, many students are asking the same question, “How will I pay for tuition?” While some may rely on payment plans or take out student loans, one of the most impactful ways to cover the cost of education is through scholarships.
Scholarships are grants or awards given to support a student’s education, typically based on financial need, academic performance, personal achievements, or community involvement. Beyond financial assistance, they carry deep meaning, providing encouragement and recognition for a student’s dedication and hard work.
The Benefits of Scholarships
Receiving a scholarship eases the financial burden of tuition and related expenses, reducing the need for student loans and lowering long-term debt. For many, scholarships also mean fewer hours spent working part-time jobs, which allows more time to focus on classes, studying, and building skills for the future.
Scholarships also serve as a recognition of achievement, validating a student’s commitment to their education and inspiring others to strive for success. They not only support individuals but also strengthen communities by fostering the next generation of leaders and professionals.

That’s why we’re proud to offer a variety of opportunities for our team members pursuing education, particularly in the healthcare field. These programs help create brighter futures for both recipients and the communities they will one day serve.
Warren D. Ruff Scholarship
The Warren D. Ruff Scholarship was established after Mr. Ruff experienced exceptional care from nurses later in his life. To honor their compassion and skill, he created a scholarship fund to support students pursuing nursing or nursing-related degrees. Priority is given to current Banner Health employees at Del E. Webb or Boswell medical centers, as well as Sun Health employees who demonstrate outstanding character and a commitment to caring for others.
Shepherd of the Hills Scholarship
In addition, the Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church Scholarship, established by the congregation at Shepherd of the Hills church, provides financial support to employees of Banner Del E. Webb or Banner Boswell hospitals who are pursuing a nursing-related degree.
Community Scholarships
Scholarships are also made possible directly within Sun Health communities. Residents of The Colonnade, Grandview Terrace, and La Loma Village generously fund scholarships for team members who are furthering their education. Unlike other programs, these scholarships are not tied to a specific field or degree, allowing employees across many disciplines to benefit.
Lasting Impact
In 2024 alone, 199 students received scholarships totaling nearly $410,000 thanks to the generosity of donors and residents. These funds make an incredible difference, opening doors to education, reducing financial stress, and empowering students to reach their full potential.
Recipients consistently express gratitude for this support, often sharing how scholarships have enabled them to continue their studies and move closer to careers in healthcare and beyond. Many students have been awarded scholarships multiple times throughout their academic journey, providing stability as they work toward their goals.
